How to Play Blackjack
Rules
Blackjack is a game where the player attempts to gather cards totalling as close as possible to 21 without going over that number, or going “bust” as it is known. After placing an initial stake each player in the game is dealt an initial two cards. All player cards are dealt face up and visible. The dealer also receives two cards, but only one can be seen. Players must assess their cards before deciding whether to stay – keep only their initial cards – or draw – take an additional card in the hope of upping their total without busting. Players who are dealt 21 with their initial two cards (Ten or Picture Card plus an Ace) win the game automatically. When players have had a chance to stay or draw, the dealer will reveal their hidden card. If their total is 17 or above they will usually stay, 16 or below they will usually draw. The winner is the closest hand to 21 after this is done.
Tips
Players who are dealt two cards of the same value can opt to split their hand, double their bet and play it as two separate hands offering them a greater chance at achieving a closer to 21 result.
If you are dealt a hand with a value of less than 17 you should draw if the dealers card is between an Eight and an Ace as the dealer is unlikely to bust in this situation.
Common Mistakes
Splitting hands of Tens in the hopes of having a better shot at Blackjack is a common mistake. While it may be tempting to aim for 21 dead, being dealt a 20 hand is likely a winner in its own right and splitting at this point is a gamble too far.
